Mission Statement

Our goals for this program are simple, yet bold:  to raise awareness of the diversity within our thriving community, to promote greater integration and participation of new members throughout our network, to provide social and educational support and, by doing so, to ensure the strength and continuity of our Ummah.

Introduction

The New Muslim Support Network (NMSN) was designed in 2007 to integrate new members into the intimate social structure of our local Islamic community.  As a person struggles to approach life from a new, unfamiliar perspective, our goal is to provide a dependable network for immersing oneself in a variety of intriguing venues to get acquainted with the community and gain access to invaluable knowledge.  Education, networking, material resources, and social activities are among a vast array of services provided to new brothers and sisters on a weekly and monthly basis.  Our vision is to promote a comfortable atmosphere in which newcomers can share their experiences, fortify their faith, and create long-term contacts and friendships to serve their spiritual as well as social needs.  NMSN seeks to increase interaction across groups of individuals so that we may all gain insight about Islam, address consequential issues, share innovative methods, and increase our collective strength and knowledge.  This program was created on the basis of flexibility and innovation; we are therefore continuously seeking ways to learn from others and improve this organization for those we serve.

  Socialization

Support

Acquiring a new faith often leads to a desire to form new social spheres that share similar values or a realignment of ties with old social groups. At times, family and friends have difficulty dealing with a person’s acceptance of an unfamiliar, often misunderstood faith. NMSN offers a safe, lively, comfortable approach to interacting with other new Muslims and ordinary members of the community to share experiences and receive input. As social creatures, we all benefit from different levels of interaction whether it be a listening ear, a fishing buddy, a helping hand, a critic, or simply a smiling face. A sense of belonging and acceptance contribute to success and confidence in all aspects of life. It is in this context that we hope you may also get to know yourself better; acknowledge areas you wish to seek improvement in and expand upon your strengths with immeasurable support from the ADAMS community.

Mutual Prosperity

NMSN seeks to provide networking within the ADAMS community to connect new Muslims to local Muslim professionals and businesses towards mutual benefit and resourcefulness. ADAMS is home to a diverse, educated, professional workforce including doctors, lawyers, writers, politicians, accountants, teachers, and artists. Thriving Muslim businesses offer exceptional services and products awaiting exploration and partnership. In turn, you may be the individual with an extraordinary profession, enthralling business, or unique talents and knowledge that you wish to share and collaborate upon.

Companionship

Am I ever going to find the right person, especially now that Islam is my religion? If questions like this one have clouded your mind from time to time, we want to help! NMSN classes and activities are an additional median through which to develop invaluable social connections and learn about peers. Informal, neutral channels are available to offer advice and provide guidance and communication between interested parties.

  Education

The New Muslims Support Network strives to develop stimulating curricula for weekly lecture series presented by respected Muslim scholars and speakers. Topics are often derived from literature approved by the ADAMS Committee on Education and form a basis from which discussions expand according to class interests and relevance. At the moment Salat workshops are offered on an individual basis to familiarize students with proper ablution /prayer rituals and language to adequately fulfill this tenant of the Islamic faith. Sheikh Abdul Rafa’a Ouertani leads an intensive initiative teaching the Quran to interested new Muslims beginning with the rudimentary Arabic alphabet, word and sentence structuring, and correct pronunciation and oral recitation.

At the heart of the NMSN educational program are weekly Islam 101 classes. Topics scheduled for the remainder of 2007 include Tawheed, Tahara, Ramadan, Quranic revelation and major themes, social collaboration, Prophets of Islam, Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him), Isra, Miraj, and Hijra, Meccan and Madni periods of Islamic Civilization, and Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him). Presenters often incorporate multimedia and useful handouts that will be available for reference on this site. The best part about these discussions is that they are designed to benefit everyone whether it be new Muslims, ordinary citizens curious about Islam, or individuals who have been raised in an Islamic context all their lives.  The atmosphere is light, the assignment is easy: be known and know those who surround you, extend or accept a helping hand, enjoy or offer good food, and laugh and learn along the way.
